Girl Scout Cadette Troop 450 and Senior Troop 1299

Purpose: Girl Scout Troops 450 and 1299 serve girls in the 7th to 12th grades. We are a member of the Girl Scouts of Swift Water Council. The Girl Scouts of the USA’s mission statement is…
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character,
who make the world a better place.

What did we do this year?

  • Participated in several Derry Community Girl Scouts (DCGS) activities including the Hay Ride, Scouting for Food, Bowling, building the Holiday Float and marching in the Parade, decorating Christmas wreaths to be displayed in downtown Derry shops on Broadway.
  • Worked with other DCGS girls and leaders to make huge Tissue Flowers to sell at Derry Fest to help raise money so two Derry Girl Scouts could attend the National Girl Congress. One of the girls is a member of our Cadette troop. At Derry Fest we helped run the craft tent where children could make free crafts.
  • Scouting Fair (with Boy Scouts)
  • Halloween Party hosted by Cadettes for the Senior Scouts & then the Seniors hosted the Christmas party for the Cadettes.
  • Overnight Birthday Party, Studio2B intro, Special guest -- girl rep to National girl congress. We celebrated each girl’s birthday throughout the night. If her birthday was November 20th – we celebrated at 11:20 PM.
  • Snow Bound – traveled to Gorham NH, spent the weekend with other Older Girls & adult Leaders – we learned to knit & how to make no-sew afghans! Later in the year we taught the rest of the troops how to make the afghans.
  • GS Sunday Weekend: We went Snow Tubing, had dinner at Margarita’s in Concord, slept over at the church, went to Best Breakfast & then participated in the GS Sunday service.
  • Mystery Night -- picture road rally where we learned about Derry History. A year-end mystery night is planned, but it is still a surprise!
  • Two girls served on the Older Girl Planning Committee & helped plan a Girls' Night at the Y which some of us attended.
  • Thinking Day International Day in Nashua -- we were Brazil – this was a lot of fun.
  • Sold fall product and Girl Scout cookies, held a cookie booth sale at Wal-Mart – on St Patrick’s Day when it was so cold. We provided cookies through the Gift of Caring to military troops and to the Derry Head Start program.
  • Sent our Leaders to the local GSSWC constituency meeting and the GSSWC Annual meeting in April.
  • We’re organizing and Hosting the 10th Annual Senior Citizen Spaghetti Supper on Sunday May 7th – First Parish Church has graciously let us use their facilities for this event for all 10 years – Thank You!
  • Working on requirements for the Silver and Gold Awards. Silver Award projects include: Troop Trip Idea booklet for Leaders, GS Community Yearbook, and Parking Lot signs for First Parish Church.
  • Upcoming events include a Earth Day activity where we will mulch and plant at the “Welcome to Derry” sign at Ross’s Corner.
  • We will also be participating in the annual DCGS camporee.

Highlights/Accomplishments:

One of our most successful events was Thinking Day: We decorated a pop-up canopy to resemble the Brazilian rain forest and shared what with knew about Girl Guides in Brazil with other troops. We had a lot of fun and want to do this again – we’d recommend it to other troops!

Girl Scouts has made a difference for us in these ways:

  • I might be having a miserable week & I get to my Girl Scout meeting and it cheers me right up!
  • I can talk on the phone now.
  • I feel more confident as an individual.
  • It makes it easier to fill our college applications.
  • My friends can’t believe I’m a Girl Scout!

Hopes for 2006-07: Earn Silver and Gold Awards, More Mystery Nights and field trips
