Youth Group Friday Night Session — March 17, 2006

To Every Thing There is a Season
Ecclesiastes 3. 1-8

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

The FPC youth group meets every other Friday evening from 6pm-9pm. The evening of St. Patrick's Day, the meeting began at the parsonage where the youth did a little outdoor spring cleaning.

After a delicious pasta dinner (I’m still not sure how I feel about bright green pasta shells, Dave, even if it was St. Patrick’s Day!) a few minutes were spent playing with my kids and the new puppy before they all went home to bed.

Then we had a wonderful guest speaker who shared her personal story of dealing with substance abuse.  It was an emotionally powerful story and a very educational evening for youth and adults.

The evening ended with a short worship service in the sanctuary, planned by the youth.  And, OK- not everything went smoothly, but God didn’t care…He was with us during the serious reflective moments and during the laughter.  The Ecclesiastes scripture reading couldn’t have been a more perfect fit — nice job, guys!  The youth and some of the adult leaders spent the night at the church.  I’m sure there was more fun, laughter and sharing … and, just maybe, they got a little sleep…

Life Lessons we learned:

  • We don’t have to look far to find wonderful and inspiring guest speakers willing to share their time and talents (thank you!)
  • Substance abuse is a widespread problem that often hits close to home; it is important to be aware of resources to help deal with these issues.
  • Even though much research has been done in recent years and education surrounding substance abuse issues begins earlier in schools; we all still have much to learn.

Little Lessons we learned:

  • Don’t put green food coloring on garlic bread
  • Even if the puppy fits in the tuba, it doesn’t mean you should put her there
  • Worship services should not be planned during math class

I hope your St. Patrick’s Day was as wonderful as mine.

God Bless,
Moira Guertin Merrill
