Poem: Masks

Written by two senior-high campers at Horton Center. First read at Gorham Congregational Church, August 7, 2005 (used in a youth-planned service for a play).

Masks

As we approach Horton Center
Our true selves get clearer.
In the other world we have places;
Who to be, how to act.

As we leave the other world
Our labels disappear.
We become truer to ourselves;
A little less is hidden.

We get closer and closer
To the mountaintop.
Held close to our hearts;
A little more is shown.

Next to fade away
The clothing of our cliques.
What shows on the outside
Of who we really aren't.

We are almost at arrival,
We almost know who we are.
Last to fade are
The masks that hide us.

Now we're exposed
To truly find ourselves.
There's nothing hiding us;
At Horton Center we are us.
