A Letter to Graduating Seniors

The graduating class of 2005 was the first group of youth group kids to whom I had to say goodbye…The senior high Sunday school class that I planned for June 5, 2005 was inspired by the lectionary readings, the graduating students and my desire to let the spirit help me find closure as I wished my first graduating class well in their future endeavors.

The reason we started today’s class by piecing together a children’s puzzle was to remind us that we are each a piece of God’s puzzle.  Some of us are corner pieces, some like being on the edge and some of us are pieces in the middle of it all; but no puzzle is complete without each and every piece.  Every one of you has contributed to the class this year…Those who are loud, funny, quiet, thoughtful, boisterous; those of you who come because you want to and those who come because your parents want you to…
You have all contributed to a wonderful year; and I thank you…

The Lord had said to Abram,

“Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you."

Genesis 12:1, NIV

The above quote is from one of today’s readings…
How appropriate as we wish our seniors well in their future endeavors; and how wonderful to be reminded that God will show them the way on their journey.
We will miss them as members of our regular Sunday school class, but we rejoice that they will always be part of our family.
As they grow and learn and change; they will be a part of us; and we will always need them and welcome them to complete our puzzle.

Seniors,
Good luck
God bless
I will miss you all.
I am no longer your Sunday school teacher
But I will always be your friend
